A Cannes Film Festival Official Partner since 2013, Thales Angénieux makes a tribute every year to a prominent international Director of Photography. After Philippe Rousselot (AFC, ASC) in 2013, Vilmos Zsigmond (HSC, ASC) in 2014, the company this year chose to honour Roger Deakins.
Favoured Director of Photography for the Coen brothers, co- presidents of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, Roger Deakins has also worked
with many other celebrated film makers, including Tim Robbins, Martin Scorcese, Sam Mendes, Denis Villeneuve, and Angelina Jolie. His work can be seen in recent classics such as Barton Fink, The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O'Brother, The Assassination of Jesse James, No Country for Old Men, The Reader, True Grit, Skyfall, and Prisoners.
Numerous directors, producers, actors and actresses who have worked with Roger Deakins came to express their recognition of the distinguished cinematographer at the ceremony, held Friday May 22. Guests included directors Joel and Ethan Coen - Roger Deakins has photographed eleven of their movies - director Agnieszka Holland (The Secret Garden) , director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners and Sicario, in Competition this year at Cannes and the forthcoming Blade Runner), actresses Frances Mc Dormand and Irène Jacob as well as actor Jake Gyllenhaal.
Thierry Frémaux, Délégué Général of the Festival, Mike Eyle a gouvernor on the Board of the BSC - British Society of Cinematographers and Richard Andry vice-president of the AFC - French Society of Cinematographers, also wished to express their admiration to Roger Deakins and his contribution to cinema.
At the ceremony, Pierre Andurand, President of Thales Angénieux, presented Roger Deakins with an Optimo 45-120 mm zoom lens which had been specially engraved in his name at the company workshops. A delegation of Angenieux employees had also the opportunity to participate in the event.
